No matter how frequently you wash your hair and try to keep it clean and nurtured, it is very likely that you are doing it in the wrong way. This is very important because proper washing technique affects the hair`s shine, bounce and overall health. This article provides tips on how to properly wash your hair and they were provided by the best hair experts in New York.

  1. Rinse

Rinsing your hair before using shampoo is the first step because the hair needs rinse just like the laundry needs water before adding detergent. Hot water opens the cuticles of the hair which in allows you to remove any dirt accumulated there. In addition, rinsing the hair with warm water loosens the natural oils through the scalp and opens the pores, allowing better absorption of the oil in conditioner.

  1. Use a Conditioner before Shampoo ( for long hair)

If you have long hair, apply a conditioner and rinse before using shampoo. This trick protects the fragile ends of the hair from damage and dryness and keeps them healthy. Moreover, it moisturizes the cuticle of the hair which in turn makes your hair smooth and shiny.

  1. Shampoo the Scalp

As opposed to the ends of the hair which are fragile and dry, the scalp and the area closest to the scalp is the oilest. Therefore, you need to shampoo your hair at the scalp only.  You will need a quarter-sized amount of shampoo or doubled amount in case your hair is long and thick.

  1. Gentleness

Wash your hair gently and carefully as the breakage is often result of damage to the hair`s cuticle which was caused by friction.

Shampoo the roots with medium pressure and vertical strokes as this motion will stimulate blood flow and hair growth. Avoid circular motions because they can tangle the hair.

Finally, continue lathering up towards the ends in a straight stroke. Make sure you don’t go back and forth or scrub in order to avoid damage of the fragile ends.

  1. Don’t Wash the Hair Twice

There is no need to shampoo the hair twice, except for cases when the hair is too dirty.

  1. Apply Conditioner

Rinse the hair off the shampoo and apply conditioner. Hold your hair with a hair clip until you are done showering and rinse at the end. Don’t use conditioner on the roots of the hair and keep it longer in order to allow better absorption.

  1. Cold Water Rinse

Finally, rinse the hair with cold water in order to close the cuticles and make the hair shinier.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • Use a shower filter in order to filter the water from minerals that harden and dry the hair.
  • If you have oily hair you need to wash it on a daily basis. On the other hand, if you have normal or dry hair, wash it three times a week.
  • Choose products depending on your hair type. For example, use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners for dry hair, and color-safe products for colored hair. Given the fact that shampoos for volume dry the hair, use moisturizing products too.
