Regardless whether you are young or old, if you consume only one can of Red Bull, it may increase the possibility of a heart attack or stroke. As it is rich in caffeine and the blood is becoming sticky after consuming this beverage, it can lead to heart problems and stroke.

Your blood changes and becomes abnormal as in person who suffers from a heart disease.

This beverage was forbidden in France from 1996 to 2008 and Uruguay, Denmark and Norway also banned this unhealthy beverage. In Kuwait, the Ministry of Commerce also banned Red Bull for persons under 16 after it caused a heart attack in two young boys, one was 16 and the other was 21.

Summary of Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

Energy drinks can be found in every store and nowadays are extremely popular. People are buying them more than they buy bottled water and they are becoming the most acquired products from the beverage business.

Although people are worried about the safety of these energy drinks, the previous year 3.5 billion cans of Red Bull were sold.

The main ingredients in energy drinks are caffeine and sugar found as sucrose, glucuronolactone and glucose. Energy drinks are responsible for boosting your energy quickly but they don’t have long-term effect. Although commercials are convincing people that drinking several energy drinks in a row will make them feel like a hero- that is not true.
Red Bull provides the following benefits, according to their official website:

-Increased concentration and reaction speed

-Increased endurance

-Improved performance

-Increased metabolism

Energy drinks are similar to soda or coffee. The negative side is that when the effect is gone you start to feel tired and will consume another energy drink to regain energy . And this process starts to resemble to an endless circle.

Although the company that produces Red Bull advises people not to consume more than two cans, but their website doesn’t contain information about such thing.

It is only stated that drinking one can of Red Bull equals with drinking a cup of java coffee.

But there is only one problem, no one can tell you for sure what the side effects are. We know that coffee contains caffeine but it doesn’t have artificial ingredients as two artificial sweeteners and other sugars which Red Bull contains.

Aspartame has metabolic, fetal, carcinogenic, allergenic and neurotoxic effects. In the book Sweet Deceptionyou you can find out more about its negative properties.

Do energy drinks have health benefits?

Compared with soda drinks which don’t contain any nutrients, Red Bull has small amount of vitamin B and taurine (amino acid) but not enough to replace the negative effect of caffeine and sugar.

The caffeine can make you more effective but no one can say with certainty what kind of effects this beverage has on human’s body.

This is quite alarming because this drink is mostly consumed by young people under 30, especially by students who often drink several cans to stay awake during exams.

Who should avoid energy drinks?

As written before they are forbidden for children. If you think better they are not recommendable for adults too:

  • Have prolonged periods of anxiety or stress
  • Pregnant or lactating
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Sensitive to caffeine
  • Have a predisposition to cardiovascular disease
  • Have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Have any blood clotting disorder
  • Pregnant or lactating

People that suffer from high blood pressure or are under stress should avoid these drinks as they can be lethal because they have negative effects on their blood vessels and blood clots can appear- claims the researcher Scott Willoughby

Deadly when combined with alcohol

You are combining a depressant and stimulant when you combine alcohol with energy drinks. Though it is very dangerous this is practiced in many bars and night clubs. When consumed together with alcohol they are known as “Yager Bombs” or “Vodka Bulls”.

There are no solid proofs about the effects of this mixture, but entering heavy depressant together with heavy stimulant can cause heart attack and from the previous examples you can see that this is not just a story.

After few deaths as a result of mixing alcohol and Red Bull together, Denmark and France forbidden this energy drink sale. An article published in 2001 in the journal Medicine, Science and Law about the negative effects of Red Bull, alcohol and the stimulant- ephedra.

What is the result? Acute psychosis.

An Italian study was published in a journal Clinical Autonomic Research Society which wrote about a young volleyball player who consumed higher amount of Red Bull and was diagnosed with “postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) associated with a vasovagal reaction,”

They concluded:

“Considering the widespread use of Red Bull among young people who are often unaware of the drink’s drug content, this case report suggests the Red Bull to be considered as a possible cause of orthostatic intolerance.”

Orthostatic intolerance is a medical condition which appears when a person from horizontal position gets up in standing position and his/hers heart rate increases above normal(heart rate that is faster than 120 beats per minute in 10 minutes after sitting or standing or faster than 30 beats per minute).

POTS (Postural Tachycardia Syndrome) is also connected with chronic fatigue syndrome, and that is why if you suffer from chronic fatigue, you should avoid energy drinks.

Avoid alcohol as well. It poisons you brain because it is neurotoxin. Also alcohol, even wine increases insulin levels which can lead to diabetes and other chronic disease.
