Many people have white dots on their nails which are usually caused by air bubbles present under the nail. The medical term for these dots is leukonychia and they can be caused by some small injuries at the nail base. White dots can also be genetic, but in some cases, they can indicate specific medical issues.

Therefore, it is recommended that you consult your doctor if you notice them on your nails. The white dots can be a symptom of fungus (onychomycosis) and warts or eczemaandpsoriasis, which can affect the whole nails. Furthermore, they can be one of the 7 warning signs of sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease which develops I the lungs, skin and other organs.

Soft nails with white specks are a sign of Plummer nail which is associated with thyroid gland disorders. If the line is located at the lower part of the nail, it means that the disease is diagnosed at early stages.

Another alarming symptom are the two horizontal lines across the surface of the nail which may indicate Hodgkin`s disease, cardiac arrest, leprosy and even malaria. Also, two horizontal narrow stripes on one or more nails may be a symptom of hypoalbuminemia (low levels of albumin in the blood).

This issue can lead to chronic and acute medical conditions, including kidney disease, inter alila, cirrhosis, and heart failure. Although in most of the cases the line is a simple inflammatory response to some infection or inury, you should still consult your doctor.
